eFolder for November 17

Happy Friday! Colder weather is here and Thanksgiving break is just around the corner. We will have school on Monday and Tuesday of next week. There will be no school Wednesday, November 22 through Friday, November 24.

When we return from Thanksgiving Break there will be a new addition to the front hall. Mrs. Alexander will have a message board under the TV next to the gym. There will be copies of forms, the lunch menu for the month, a copy of our latest eFolder, as well as info on camps, etc. Be sure to check it out.

Reminders of All Kinds

Pick-Up and Drop-Off

Please remember to pull to the curb to drop-off in the morning and for pick-up in the afternoon. Parents stopping in the middle of the street not only back up traffic, they create an unsafe condition for the students entering and exiting the vehicle. We are currently working with the City of Peoria to study the possibilities of making the part of Underhill that is directly in front of the school a one-way road. Please try to avoid traveling northbound toward Bradley Ave. at the drop off and pick up time. In the morning, if you need to walk your children into the building, please park in one of our parking lots, NOT on the street in front of the school. We need to provide easy access for all cars at the drop off time. Getting out of your car for any reason creates an unsafe back-up situation. At this point in the year, most children are very comfortable walking into the building on their own.

Uniforms

Make sure that your child is dressed in the proper uniform. We are beginning to see students with navy skirts and jumpers, printed/sparkled leggings, furry boots, colored socks, and shoes that are not in compliance with our dress code. If you need a copy of the dress code, please contact the office and we will be happy to send you one.

Illness

Students need to be fever free and symptom free without meds for 24 hours before returning to school following any illness. Please do NOT give your child Tylenol or Ibuprofen in the morning for a fever and send them to school. If you do this, you will almost always receive a call from the school later in the day that your child is ill and needs to be picked up. Help us to limit the spread of germs. In, addition, please make sure that the office has your contact information so that we are able to get in touch with you in case of illness.

Winter Clothing

Students will be sent outside for recess in the winter as weather permits. This means that your child needs the proper winter gear. Students need to have a coat, and if necessary, hat and gloves or mittens. Names should be marked on all clothing to ensure its return if lost or misplaced.

Winter Weather Closings

This may be a bit early, but in case bad weather necessitates school closings, you will receive a phone call via our Parent Alert system. Once again, it is important that we have up-to-date contact information for all families.

Spirit Day

We packed the place and collected 75 cans of food at the girls game the other night. This means that we will have a Spirit Day on Tuesday, November 21. Proper attire for a Spirit Day is jeans or khakis (no leggings or sweatpants) and a spirit shirt.

Thanksgiving Food Drive

The SMS Student Council would like to thank everyone that sent donations for the food drive. Our 4th graders collected the most items, and will receive a spirit day to be set at a later date. Thank you for helping those in need!

Volunteers Needed

Due to a change in the PreK 3 classroom, Mrs. Hufeld is no longer to able to help with playground duty. We are looking for volunteers to help us monitor the playground during lunch recess. If you have free time between 11:15AM and 12:45PM and would like to help out, please contact Dr. Dillon. We will take you once a week, twice a week, or every day, whatever time your schedule allows. Grandparents are welcome, too!

Not available during the day? We have other opportunities for volunteers available. Check out our Sign Up Genius page to see what areas we need help with: https://tinyurl.com/sms-volunteers2017-2018

Scholarship Opportunity

The state of Illinois is setting up a scholarship program for students who attend private schools. The program is called the Illinois Tax Credit Scholarship Program and it is made possible by the Invest in Kids Act. It’s a brand new program, so the details are in the process of being worked out and communicated to us. One thing we do know is that on January 2, 2018, the application process will begin. The program is based on need but also on first come first serve basis. In order to have the best chance at qualifying for a scholarship, families will want to apply on January 2, so please put that date on your calendar! We will be sharing more information about the program as we receive it.
