Happy Friday! It’s been a busy week at SMS. Congratulations to our 8th graders who received the sacrament of Confirmation last Saturday. May God’s grace and blessings be with each one of you as you continue to grow in your faith.
Tuesday many of our 5th-8th grade students participated in the Declamations, a speech contest, hosted by St. Vincent de Paul. We posted great scores, with almost all of our participants receiving a rating of “1”, which isthe highest rating they can receive. Thank you to the teachers that take the time to volunteer to coach our students. We couldn’t do it without them!
Our annual Fine Arts Event was held last night at the Spalding Center. It was amazing to see the creativity our students possess. A big thank you to Mrs. Placko for organizing the event, and to Miss Koch for the musical and dramatic entertainment of the evening.

St. Patrick’s Day Parade
Don’t forget to put on your green (mixed with a bit of blue and gold), and join us downtown for the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade, which steps off at 11:00AM. St. Mark will have a float as well as a truck with our 8th grade boys basketball team. If you would like to walk with us, please meet at us the staging area on Hancock between Madison and Jefferson Streets between 10:30 and 10:45AM. We are in Block 4. Please remember that all students must be accompanied by an adult.
Student Council Fill the “Pack and Play” Collection
Student Council needs your help to support the Catholic Charities St. Gianna Baby Pantry. Jackets, sweaters, sweatshirts, pants/jeans, and socks for both boys and girls in sizes 2T and 0-3 months, diapers sizes 4,5,6 and pacifiers, bibs and small sized bottles are greatly appreciated. The Pack “n Play will be in the Office hallway for any donations you can make. We will be collecting items Monday, March 23 through Friday, March 29.
SMS 19th Annual Auction – Under the Bigtop
Invitations have been mailed for our 19th annual auction, Under the Big Top, to be held on Saturday, March 24. If you did not receive your invitation and would like to attend, please contact the office ASAP.
Please note that every family can lend a helping hand. It is crucial to make this event a big success. Much of the tuition assistance we were able to award this year was a result of the great turnout and money raised last year. If you have applied for assistance or plan to this year, be sure to show your support to the auction! There are many ways you can help.

Empower Illinois Scholarship Application Update
Parents who applied for the Empower Illinois Scholarship need to monitor their email accounts! You will have seven days after you receive an email with details on completing your application. We will be available to scan documents and assist families with completion of this process.
Here are some discrepancies that parents discovered as they went through the application process online. This may be helpful to others as they complete the application process.
Filed taxes: In the email after submitting the application, it states 2016 OR 2017 taxes but when you go to upload the documents from the website both 2016 and 2017 are listed as required. If you have not yet filed for 2017, send 2016 taxes and 2017 W2s. For those that had documents uploaded back in January, only W2s were included.
Days to complete: It lists 7 days total from the time and date of the email to complete the application and submit the documents. However, under St. Mark it still says 3 days. I did get my documents in within the 3 days (with the exception of the optional Letter of Special Circumstances which was in within 7 days) but wasn’t aware of this until the last few hours before it needed to be done.
Proof of Residency: We only had a utility bill copied which only one parent’s name so another parent suggested that you upload the other parent’s driver’s license, so that were both included.This is a good suggestion.
The computer lab will be available during the following times next week:
Monday 9-10:30am, 12:45-1:30pm
Tuesday 10:30am-12:00pm, 12:45-1:30pm
Wednesday 9:00-10:30am, 12:45-1:30pm
Thursday 9:00-11:00am, 12:45-1:30pm
Please note that you will need to schedule your appointment for the beginning of an available time slot, and you MUST call the office to schedule an appointment. If these times do not work with your schedule, please call the office and we will work with you to find a time to complete your application.
The John Lancaster Spalding Scholarship Endowment Fund was established with funds raised in the Diocese of Peoria ROOTED IN FAITH Campaign. This scholarship is need based and awards to be used in the 2018–2019 school year will be announced by May 30, 2018.
The application deadline date is April 15, 2018, and all 2017 tax documentation/requirements necessary to complete the application must be submitted to FACTS by that date. Families are encouraged to apply early.
The Protocols and Procedures and a handy Checklist to guide families through the application process, as well as Spanish version can be found on the diocesan website: www.cdop.org, under Catholic Education and then under Financial Assistance.
Parents are be urged to apply online and can access the FACTS application form at: online.factsmgt.com/aid. The application is available in both English and Spanish.

PND Bunny Breakfast
Enjoy a morning of Easter fun at Peoria Notre Dame’s Easter Bunny breakfast on Saturday, March 24 from 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM. Cost is $3 for children 3 and over, $5 for adults. Activities include breakfast, arts and crafts, and an Easter egg hunt. Don’t miss out on what’s sure to be an egg-celent time!
