Happy Friday! It’s the beginning of December, and the countdown begins. This Sunday is the first Sunday of Advent, and time to prepare for Jesus’ coming. Each Monday of Advent, during morning assembly, we will light a candle on our Advent wreath.

Safety Update

We are in the process of working with the City of Peoria to determine what changes can be made to increase the safety of our streets surrounding the school. Since it is illegal to stop within 30 feet of a STOP sign, YIELD sign or traffic control signal, we are currently putting out orange cones to help remind our drivers, as well as open up the visibility of the crosswalk areas. Cell phones are also illegal in school zones. Please continue to do what you can to ensure the safety of all of our students, families, and staff.

Reminders

Dress Code

Winter weather is upon us. With the colder weather, comes a different style of dress. Please remember that all students are required to comply with our dress code. If a student wears leggings under a jumper or skirt, they must be to ankle and solid navy or black. Boots of any kind are not allowed in the building, but may be worn outside for warmth. Please help your children to comply with this important school rule.(A copy of the dress code can be found on the information board located next the the gym doors in the office hallway.)

Absences

Please make sure to notify the school if your child will be absent. You can phone the school, email the school, or if your child has a sibling, have them stop in the office to let us know. Doing this will prevent a phone call later in the morning checking on the whereabouts of your child.

In addition, if your child has a fever, vomiting or diarrhea, they must be symptom free without meds for 24 hours before returning to school. This will help prevent the spread of germs.

Scholarship Opportunity

The state of Illinois is setting up a scholarship program for students who attend private schools. The program is called the Illinois Tax Credit Scholarship Program and it is made possible by the Invest in Kids Act. It’s a brand new program, so the details are in the process of being worked out and communicated to us. One thing we do know is that on January 2, 2018, the application process will begin. The program is based on need but also on first come first serve basis. In order to have the best chance at qualifying for a scholarship, families will want to apply on January 2, so please put that date on your calendar! A packet with information on how to apply for this scholarship will be emailed to all families in the near future.

Santa Breakfast and Cookie Walk

Please mark your calendars for our annual Santa Breakfast and Cookie Walk on Sunday, December 10 from 7:30-11:00AM. Tickets are $5 a person and are available in the school office. Please let us know your name, desired time for your reservation, and the number of tickets needed. Cash or checks will be accepted and checks can be made payable to St. Mark PSA. Santa called and said he would be here!!!!

Our annual cookie walk will also take place that morning in the PreK hallway. Grab a plate or two of homemade goodies for $5 per pound. Each family is asked to donate a minimum of three dozen of their best homemade holiday treats. In addition, items must NOT need refrigeration. Please deliver these delicious goodies to the school on Friday, December 8 from 3-5PM or on Saturday, December 9 from 9AM-12:30PM.

Help the West-Mark Food Pantry

A Letter from Diane Nowlan:

Schnucks, located on University in the Metro Center, has once again chosen West-Mark Food Pantry as the beneficiary of the Schnucks “Bags for My Cause” program. This means that for the entire month of December every time a reusable bag with the message “Every Bag Feeds a Neighbor in Need” is purchased at the Schnucks on University, the food pantry will receive $1. Please visit the store, locate the reusable bag rack and buy a few Hunger Bags to help support the food pantry. We also ask that you spread the word to your family and friends. The more bags purchased, the greater the donation to the West-Mark Food Pantry.

We are so thankful to the parents, students, and faculty of St. Mark’s School for their help feeding the hungry, and are keeping you in our prayers.

If you have any questions, please contact Diane Nowlan at 682-1603. Thank you for your help keeping our shelves full. Happy Advent and Merry Christmas!

Gratefully yours,

Diane Nowlan
